The Hawaii Community Foundation has been endowed with the Kekumuola Fund to provide grants to non-profit organizations and individuals that support the doula vision of providing emotional care and physical comfort as part of the maternity care team.
The Hawaii Primary Care Association has been awarded a grant by the Hawaii Community Foundation to administer these funds and disseminate information about their availability.
In reviewing training proposals (for
individuals) the following will be considered by the Kekumuola Fund grantors:

There is a limited number (8 total) of up to $200 (partial) scholarships being given by the Kekumuola Fund of the Hawai’i Primary Care Association, for women registering in the fall of 2008 to begin the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy’s Doula Certification Program for classes beginning in January of 2009.
Applicants must first be registered to take the 2008-2009 program with the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy before applying for this grant. Please include written acknowledgement from the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy of your acceptance into the doula program.
Applications for funds may be sent any time between Sept. 1st thru Dec. 1st, 2008. Scholarships will be awarded to those eligible on a first-come, first-serve basis. Generally, applicants will not be eligible for more than one grant from the Kekumuola Fund per calendar year. Preference will be given to first-time applicants.
Proposals should be given at least one month for review, processing and approval of grants according to the Kekumuola Fund goals. Completeness of grant proposal application information is requested. All applicants that send proposals after any given year’s funding allotment has been used will be so notified and invited to re-submit their proposals the following year.
Applications will be reviewed and a funding decision made within one month of their receipt at the Hawaii Primary Care Association.
Applicants will be sent written or verbal notification telling them whether or not they were funded. Funds granted will either accompany the notification to successful applicants, or sent directly to the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy on your behalf.
Grants are considered income and should be reported to the IRS and state tax collector in your income tax returns.
Grantees must report back to the Hawaii Primary Care Association within two months of having expended their Kekumuola Fund grants. The brief report will include the date of expenditure, a summary of how funds were spent, and outcomes. Individuals that fail to report back will not be eligible for future grants until reports are received.
Applications should be brief (we suggest a maximum of 2-3 pages of narrative) and should include amount requested, purpose and expected outcomes, timeline, and a brief summary of the individual’s background and appropriateness for the grant. All applicants should provide current mailing address, daytime telephone number, fax number (if any), and e-mail address (if any).
