In 2009 our primary instructors for the Introduction to Midwifery & Doula Certification Program will be Nina Millar, Martha (Mala) Landt and Dee Anne Domnick.

About our Primary Instructors:

Nina Millar has been involved with birth and babies since the birth of her daughter in 1978 and her son in 1982.

Nina  studied independently with direct entry midwives, naturopathic physicians and many related specialists.  She completed a nursing degree in 1992 as a means to credentialize her midwifery practice.  When N.A.R.M. developed the Certified Professional Midwifery certificate, she completed that.

As a founding officer of the Midwives Alliance of Hawaii in 1993, Nina has worked diligently bridging the organization with Hawaii's Department of Health, Maternal and Infant Services,  and Vital Statistics.   Nina is committed to seeing midwifery grow stronger in the 21st century.

Martha Landt, mother of four boys, comes from a varied background.  She received her B.A. in Anthropology and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She went on to get her Masters in Special Education from Appalachian State University.  For the past 8 years, Martha has being working for the Department of Education and is now a licensed teacher of Special Education for the State of Hawaii.

Martha is a Nationally Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) as well as a Nationally Certified Childbirth Educator.   She is also a Nationally Certified Doula with three organizations, Association of Labor Assistants & Childbirth Educators (ALACE), Doulas of North America (DONA), and the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy (BFDA).

Martha received her National Massage Therapy Certification in 1994.  She was living in the Virgin Islands at the time, teaching in the public schools there.  She is also extensively trained in Massage Therapy. Her passion integrates Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki, with her love for midwifery.  Martha teaches prenatal yoga and has been a  Nationally Certified Yoga Instructor for over 30 years.   She was trained through Elizabeth Noble’s program in Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year and many other mentors.

This past year, Martha completed her Hawaii teachers license in Special Education and followed her passion to work in other countries in midwifery.  She went to Bali and worked at the Yanasan Bumi Sehat, Gentle Birth Center for a month.  She and the organizer of the clinic, Robin Lim, have established this center as a place where our students can do their practicum.

Dee Anne Domnick, mother of 2 girls, is a licensed midwife, Nationally Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and the founder and Executive Director of the Barefoot Doctors’ Academy, a non-profit organization that holds doula care, midwifery and holistic health education as its central focus.      She served on the Board of Directors of the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council (MEAC), which is responsible for the task of accrediting all qualifying midwifery schools in the United States.

Dee Anne is the current president of the Midwives Alliance of Hawaii, was past president of the Louisiana Midwives Association and also the Chairperson for the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners’ Advisory Committee on Midwifery.  A recent accomplishment  was spear-heading a joint project with the Red Cross and BFDA, as chief emergency coordinator for post-Katrina Maternal & Infant Welfare for the State of Louisiana.

As a pioneer in midwifery, she’s brought birthing options, doula and midwifery training to women for decades.  Her knowledge leads her to integrate the qualities of love, happiness, wholesome nutrition, herbology, exercise, bodywork, whole-brain functioning, and health education, with practicality and skill.
